Depression does not discriminate: Age and Gender in Depression

Because it is misunderstood, childhood depression is often misdiagnosed. Childhood depression goes far beyond just being sad. A depressed child loses interest in things they normally enjoy doing, wants to be alone and rarely laughs aloud.

Depression in teenagers/adolescents is pretty common. Teenage girls are at higher risk of becoming depressed than boys. Depressed teens tend to exhibit anti-social behavior and many abuse drugs, alcohol and/or smoke.

Depression later in life is not easily identified because many diseases that affect the elderly mask the symptoms of depression. Unlike in other age groups, older persons (over 60) suffer from depression are more likely to commit or try to commit suicide.

Seasonal Sepression: Why Season Changes Make You Depressed?

The most commonly known seasonal depression is 'winter blues', but there is also 'summer depression'. Winter blues normally starts in fall and ends as spring comes around, while summer depression is the opposite.

Seasonal depression is believed to be caused by an abnormality of the body to properly regulate its biological clock. As the hours of daylight lessens during the winter months, the body becomes confused and does not work as it should.

Persons with seasonal depression can also help themselves by spending as much time in the sun as possible; however they must take care to protect the skin with sunscreen.

You can also find help for your depression at your local church or community center. Depression help for low income people can often be found through these resources, and oftentimes the counseling is free. Most churches provide counseling for depression as a service to members of their congregation, but won't turn away someone simply because they do not belong to the church.

The support groups typically meet once a week. There you can meet people who are overcoming their depression and draw strength from each other.

Community centers can also help with resources for the causes of some depression, such as food banks, energy assistance, and health care.
