Depression Help - Depression does not discriminate: Age and Gender in Depression

Depression does not discriminate: Age and Gender in Depression

Because it is misunderstood, childhood depression is often misdiagnosed. Childhood depression goes far beyond just being sad. A depressed child loses interest in things they normally enjoy doing, wants to be alone and rarely laughs aloud.

Depression in teenagers/adolescents is pretty common. Teenage girls are at higher risk of becoming depressed than boys. Depressed teens tend to exhibit anti-social behavior and many abuse drugs, alcohol and/or smoke.

Depression later in life is not easily identified because many diseases that affect the elderly mask the symptoms of depression. Unlike in other age groups, older persons (over 60) suffer from depression are more likely to commit or try to commit suicide.

Depression Support Groups and What You Can Expect

The sessions are run by licensed counselors and are closely monitored for any changes in the level of depression for the participants.

This way the intake assessor can determine which group you are most appropriate for or determine whether or not you need individual counseling first.

At the first meeting you will probably give your name and tell the group a little about yourself, and then be allowed to sit and listen.

Depression Help - What Does Severe Depression as Opposed to Chronic Depression Look Like?

What Does Severe Depression as Opposed to Chronic Depression Look Like?

Severe depression is a profound depression resulting from a loss. Chronic depression is the end result of severe depression if help is not sought or the sufferer does not move through the sadness.

The death of a loved one can bring on severe depression. You miss them terribly, cry long and often, and can find no joy in your life. You can't seem to do the regular household chores or go about your daily routine. This profound sadness is part of the grief process.

Everyone grieves differently, and there is no set deadline for when your grief should end. Real grief never ends, I have been told, but in time we are typically able to function and even experience happiness again, as life does go on.

Treating Depression: The Options are Many

While counseling tends to be short-term, psychotherapy is long term. There are many different techniques of psychotherapy to treat depression. Some are: cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and family therapy.

There two aspects to counseling, talking therapies and straight counseling.

Counseling on the other hand provides a 'neutral' setting for you to discuss your problems without fear of anyone judging you.

Cause of Depression: What They are and How to Identify Them

There is much debate as to the causes of depression. This is because depression is still very much misunderstood and the factors that lead to a depressive episode in one person are not the same for another.

It is for this reason that some experts talk about risk factors for depression rather than causes of depression.
